YOUR CAREER IS NOT A LINEAR JOURNEY

Starting as young children, we are asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I don't subscribe to the notion that you will be one thing 'when you grow up'.  You will be lots of things - both professionally and personally.  I identify as Recruiter, Career Coach, Sales Executive, People Leader, Entrepreneur, Community Builder, Marketer, Writer, and Amateur Podcast Producer to name a few - and that is just my professional side!  I could also add Mom, Wife, Feminist, Hockey Mom, Dance mom, Chauffer, Auntie, Outdoors(wo)man, Niece, Loyal Friend, Avid live music lover, etc. to the list.

So why is it society puts so much pressure on us to decide what we want to "be"?  I work with job seekers of all ages and they all struggle with this.  Research shows that less than 50% of adults work in the field they hold a degree in (Finance major here!). In my coaching work, I help clients reframe the thought process to view their career progression as a broken ladder.   The broken ladder career framework is the idea that is not always most beneficial to move "up" in an organization or industry - sometimes you need to look at a parallel position in order to progress your career in the long term.  Sometimes, stepping sideways to a parallel position to your current one will allow you to gain deeper expertise in your field or fill in  gap in your development your current role will not allow for.  This additional "sideways" experience can then allow you to move up the ladder to the next position in your career.  OR, it can help illuminate other interests you didn't know you had in order to pivot into a new position/field.
